Discovered on March 19, 2024 at approximately 7:30pm.

Bacteria levels may be high in the Inverness Village, Palmetto Dunes Stormwater Pond due to a Sanitary Sewer Overflow near the Inverness Lift Station in Palmetto Dunes. The overflow was caused by a break in a 14-inch sewer force main. Broad Creek Public Service District (the District) was able to secure the break with materials onsite. There was a possible 40,000-to-60,000-gallon discharge into the nearby stormwater pond adjacent to the station. The District has contacted the appropriate regulatory entities. Area cleanup was immediately initiated. Water sampling and water quality monitoring is ongoing with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC). The public is advised not to come into contact with the stormwater pond at this time. There is no known danger to the public or water systems at this time, and none is foreseen.

Please contact Broad Creek PSD at 843-785-7582 with any questions.

  1. What the Association is Doing
Coordinated Testing: The Town of Hilton Head will be coordinating with BCPSD for water sample testing in the directly affected pond, nearby lagoon outflow, and possible affected upstream areas, over the next few days.
  2. Baseline Testing: According to the Town, initial results do not indicate any required action on the part of the Palmetto Dunes Property Owners Association at this time. However, they plan to use these results as a baseline for future testing.
  3. Monitoring and Collaboration: Test result information will be shared with the Association so that we can closely monitor the situation in conjunction with our water quality specialist.
  4. Safety Measures: As an additional precaution, we requested our water quality specialist to administer a separate set of tests the following week. This will allow the Association to have some additional data to confirm our findings are consistent.
