Spotlight on Summer Stages: Theater Highlights in Hilton Head (June–August)

This summer, Hilton Head Island again showcases top-tier theatrical productions from three beloved local companies. At the heart of Shelter Cove, the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina brings back its hit production Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, running from July 9 to August 17. This electrifying tribute celebrates the disco legend’s greatest hits like “Hot Stuff” and “Last Dance,” offering nostalgia, drama, and infectious energy on its 349-seat main stage

On the south end of the Island at Coligny Theatre, Sea Glass Stage Company kicks off its summer run of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, staging the delightfully chaotic competition from July 11 through August 3.  Community-driven and full of charm, this edgy musical brings local talent and heartfelt laughter to the heart of the island arts scene.

Meanwhile, Main Stage Community Theatre offers an upbeat, family-friendly hit: Shrek the Musical. Running at Hilton Head Prep’s Main Street Theatre from June 19 to 29, this lively adaptation follows the lovable ogre Shrek as he rescues Princess Fiona, joined by his fast-talking friend Donkey and a host of fairy-tale characters.

Together, these three stellar productions—from Broadway hits and quirky competitions to beloved fairy tales—create a diverse and accessible summer theater season that’s perfect for both tourists and island locals. This lineup is one not to miss!
