Pay Forward by Giving Back
The Lowcountry Blessing Box Project (https://www.chsblessingbox.org) started in Charleston, SC as a great neighbor-to-neighbor effort to provide families with non-perishable foods and other essential items like diapers, sunscreen, and toiletries. The Blessings Box Project aims to decrease food insecurity. Kathy Straughn of Bluffton was inspired by this project and has installed six, soon to be seven Blessing Boxes in Bluffton. There are now over 100 Blessing Boxes across South Carolina, and over 250 regionally.
These community resources serve as a “give what you can, take what you need” where those in need and those able to serve come together in a small but might manner. Blessing Boxes have always been about more than just food. It is about building community, encouraging kindness, and teaching each other about empathy. Founder Katie Dahlheim refers to it as “building a kindness army.”
There are several ways to get involved locally. You can donate non-perishable and essentials by placing items in a Blessing Box or make a direct donation via Wish Lists on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/registries/gl/guest-view/2OBKO402X2XQK) and Walmart (https://www.walmart.com/registry/er/d9bca58b-3037-4e78-bb9d-6b4625671cab). Items ordered off these lists are shipped directly to Blessing Box Bluffton and then distributed to the various box locations. Additionally, you can contact Kathy Straughn directly at [email protected].
There are also three Blessing Boxes on Hilton Head at these locations: 15 Marshland Rd., Christ Lutheran Church, and Volunteers in Medicine.
We are very fortunate to call Palmetto Dunes our home. And to support our greater Lowcountry community, please consider how you might pay forward by giving back. Every contribution is valuable.
