Meet Your Neighbors! Debbie and Lee Whitehurst

Meet your neighbors, Lee and Debbie Whitehurst, who live on Starboard Tack in the Mariners section of Palmetto Dunes. Lee and Debbie are active members of the community as they sit on many committees. Lee sits on the PD POA board of Directors as well as the Security and Sustainment committee, while Debbie is on the Social Media committee, and is on the Board of The Lean Ensemble Theater. She is also involved with a book club, the happy hours around the world group and Tapas at Home group. The couple also belongs to the Kicking Asphalts, which is a Saturday morning biking group, which does rides all over Beaufort County.

The couple bought their beautiful house in 2015, starting out as snowbirds. Each year they added time to their stay until they decided to move to PD full time. Although it was a tough decision to sell their home in West Virginia, they knew it was going to be a good one. They left their very remote, wooded River Community, named The Crossings, in West Virginia for the lagoon, live oak trees and beach in Palmetto Dunes.

When asked what like about PD, they said “We love the short walk to the beach, biking everywhere and being on the lagoon in their Duffy, which is named Jethro’s Hull.”  They added, “While cruising in the Duffy, we enjoy bird watching and cocktail cruises.”  The couple added that they love the convenience of the restaurants and shopping. In West Virginia, it was an hour drive to any major store, but in PD they can bike to restaurants, grocery stores and other activities.

Lee and Debbie are both big fans of live theater and live music, of which Hilton Head Island has plenty. The couple likes to take advantage of the four theater groups on the Island, attending most shows.

Lee and Debbie have two daughters and three granddaughters, all who live in Leesburg, Virginia. The couple said it is always great to go there and visit them.
