Why Standing Water Happens After Storms

With our coastal environment and low-lying soils, standing water after a storm is normal. Knowing what to expect can help reduce concerns and keep our community focused on serious drainage issues.

Why You May See Standing Water

When the ground is already saturated from repeated or heavy rains, it cannot absorb water immediately. As a result, you may notice temporary water in:

  • Yards and landscaped areas
  • Driveways, sidewalks, and easements
  • Roadside swales and low spots

What’s Normal

It is normal and expected for standing water to remain for 24 to 72 hours following heavy rain. This is the time needed for water to infiltrate into the soil and for the drainage system to carry it away.

When to Call

  • If water is still pooling in the roadway 24 hours after the rain ceases.
  • If water is rising to a level that might breach your home’s living space.
  • In either case, please contact the Town Stormwater Hotline: 843-671-7246, and contact PD Security, 843-785-1120, so Maintenance can check the drain inlets.

Key Takeaway

Not all standing water is a problem. Short-term ponding is part of nature’s cycle. By setting expectations, we can reduce unnecessary flooding reports and ensure PDPOA resources go where they’re needed most.
