Pool Barrier Fences

Beginning January 1, 2026, the Town of Hilton Head Island began enforcing a new requirement mandating pool barrier fences for all new permit applications involving pools and spas. Prior to this change, pool barrier fences were not permitted under the Palmetto Dunes Property Owners Association (PDPOA) Architectural Standards and Guidelines.

In response to the Town’s updated requirements, the PDPOA Architectural Standards and Guidelines were revised to permit pool barrier fences, effective January 1, 2026.

Pool barrier fences are now allowed and may consist of non-reflective dark-framed materials or clear glass, with a maximum height of 60 inches. Property owners must submit a Tier 2 Architectural Review Board (ARB) application for approval, including details regarding the fence style, framing color, or glass type.

For new pools, the barrier fence must be installed a minimum of four feet from the pool edge. For existing pools, the fence must be located at least four feet from the edge of the existing pool deck. As an alternative to a barrier fence, a retractable pool cover may also be utilized.

Property owners are encouraged to take advantage of the new guidelines to install pool barrier fences to enhance safety in their yards and reduce property insurance costs at their residences.
