Grinding of the Greens & Holiday Light Drop-Off
The Town of Hilton Head Island Government is pleased to announce its 14th annual Grinding of the Greens program, offering residents and visitors a convenient and environmentally friendly way to recycle natural Christmas trees and wreaths during the holiday season. This initiative promotes sustainability by transforming these items into mulch for free community use.
The program’s drop-off period runs from Thursday, December 26, 2024, through Thursday, January 19, 2025. Collection sites are available 24/7 at the following locations:
- Coligny Beach Parking Lot: Located on the South Forest Beach side, in the paved area.
- Old Gullah Flea Market Site: Designated area at Highway 278 and Chamberlain Drive.
- Recycling Center: This location will accept holiday lights only.
Participants are encouraged to ensure all ornaments, lights, and garlands are removed from trees and wreaths before drop-off to facilitate clean and efficient recycling. The collected greenery will be ground into high-quality mulch, which will be made available to the public at no cost starting Friday, January 20, 2025, while supplies last.
In addition to natural tree recycling, the program also provides an opportunity to recycle holiday string lights at the designated locations, further contributing to landfill waste reduction.
By participating in the Grinding of the Greens program, the community can work together to support the island’s environmental health and sustainability efforts. For more information, please contact the Town of Hilton Head Island Government.
