Christmas Tree Pick-up Reminder

Christmas trees will be picked up on Wednesdays throughout January as part of our weekly landscape debris pickup service. This service is only provided to single-family homes. If you are part of a condominium association, you will need to ask your regime management company if there is any tree pickup service available.

You can also take your tree to the Town’s Grinding of the Greens. The Town of Hilton Head Island hosts this program as a way to recycle natural Christmas trees after the holiday season.

For the first time, holiday lights will also be accepted for recycling. Recycling services for both trees and lights will be available at the following drop-off locations from Monday, December 26, 2022, through Sunday, January 15, 2023:

  • Coligny Beach Parking Lot (Paved area on the South Forest Beach side). The lot is adjacent to Lowcountry Celebration Park on the south end of the Island.
  • Old Gullah Flea Market Site (Off William Hilton Parkway and Chamberlin Drive). This site is across William Hilton Parkway from Squire Pope Road on the north end of the Island.

Make sure to prepare your tree for grinding by removing all ornaments, lights, and garland to ensure the resulting mulch is clean. When the grinding is complete, all are welcome to stop by and pick up free mulch starting Tuesday, January 17, 2023. Mulch will be available until Monday, January 23, or until it is gone. Last year, approximately 200 trees were dropped off and ground into mulch.

The Outside Foundation, a local non-profit, is coordinating the collection of holiday lights for recycling. Light collection bins will be clearly marked “recycled lights only.” After the collection is complete, bins containing the lights will be shipped to a recycler.
