Short History of Key Palmetto Dunes Events
  • 1967   Development of Palmetto Dunes began.
  • 1968   Robert Trent Jones Course and the lagoon system were completed. The sales office was opened.
  • 1969    Restaurant, Registration Office, and Pro Shop were opened.
  • 1970   Inn Villas were completed.
  • 1971   Beach Villas and Water Oak Villas were completed. Palmetto Dunes Public Service District was created. Phipps Land Company became an investor in Palmetto Dunes Development Corporation.
  • 1972   Phipps Land Company acquired the remainder of the company and created Palmetto Dunes Resort, Inc. Palmetto Dunes PSD became Broad Creek Public Service District. Palmetto Dunes Touring Pro, Johnny Miller won the Heritage.
  • 1973    Hickory Cove Villas and Chimney Cove housing completed. Construction began on Fazio Golf Course and Queen's Grant Villas. Elevated 500,000 gallon water tank was completed. Trent Jones Golf Center was enlarged. Villa Registration building was opened.
  • 1974   Hyatt Hotel groundbreaking. Trent Jones Halfway House was rebuilt after the fire. The Tennis Center was completed.. George Fazio Golf Course opened. Land was donated for Christ Lutheran Church. Johnny Miller won second Heritage.
  • 1975   Rod Laver-Roy Emerson tennis operation began. Golf courses were leased to Roquemore-Spence. Dunes Marketing Group, Sand Dollar Management, and Property Administrators, Inc. took over sales, villa rentals, and regime management operations, respectively.
  • 1976   Hyatt Regency on Hilton Head Island at Palmetto Dunes opened. Inverness Village and the Moorings were completed.
  • 1977   Ocean Cove villas were completed.
  • 1978   Fazio Tennis courts were completed. Turnberry Village opened.
  • 1979   Greenwood Development Corporation acquired Palmetto Dunes and assumed the operation of the golf courses.
  • 1980   Captain's Walk and Captain's Cove villas were completed. Construction began on Shelter Cove Marina.
  • 1981   St. Andrews Common was completed.
  • 1982   Land was donated for Palmetto Dunes Club. Development began on Mariner's Inn (currently the Hilton Oceanfront Resort) and Harbour Side I and II.
  • 1983   Mariner's Inn-A Clarion Hotel opened. Land donated for Palmetto Dunes fire station. Harbour Pointe, Captain's Quarters, Waters Edge, Dunes sales office and Newport in Shelter Cove developed. Shelter Cove Harbour and King Neptune sundial dedicated. Harbourmaster building opened.
  • 1984   Land donated and construction completed for Hilton Head Island Chamber of Commerce building in Shelter Cove. The Anchorage was developed.
  • 1985   Greenwood Development Corporation executive office building completed in Shelter Cove Executive Park. Greenwood Development assumed Rod Laver Tennis operation. Development of Leamington began.
  • 1986   Arthur Hills Golf Course was opened.
  • 1999    Mariners T-street drainage project was completed.
  • 2001    New Tennis Center was completed.
  • 2002   Property Owners division of Greenwood Development was established to provide greater management transparency for the Resort.
  • 2002   Robert Trent Jones Golf Course was completely renovated.
  • 2006 PDPOA takes over management of the resort common areas from Greenwood Development.
